São Paulo Police Probe Bar Assault That Left Trainer With 45 Stitches

A 32-year-old personal trainer from Rio de Janeiro, Thiago Medeiros, was seriously injured on 21 June after confronting a man who was harassing a group of women in a bar in Águas de Lindóia, an interior city in São Paulo state. According to police records and witness accounts, the aggressor struck Medeiros with a punch and then attacked him repeatedly with a broken glass cup. Medeiros received 45 stitches to his face at the municipal hospital and suffered a convulsion the following morning, requiring transfer to a private facility in Piracicaba. He has been unable to resume work and says he is relying on savings and family support while recovering from physical and psychological trauma. The Civil Police of São Paulo have opened an inquiry and are analyzing security-camera footage, but no suspect had been identified or arrested by 8 July. Medeiros, who filed a complaint and underwent a forensic medical exam, is pressing for the assailant to be charged, calling the attack an attempted homicide.
