São Paulo experienced its coldest night and morning of 2025 on June 25, with temperatures dropping to as low as -0.6ºC in the Parelheiros neighborhood in the city's extreme south. The average temperature in the city during this period was around 6ºC. This marked the coldest overnight temperature in São Paulo in nine years, with some interior areas of the state recording temperatures as low as -2.4ºC. Following this, the cold wave extended into early July, affecting the southern states of Brazil, including Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina, where multiple municipalities registered subzero temperatures, with some areas in Rio Grande do Sul reaching lows of -5ºC. More than 70 cities in Rio Grande do Sul reported negative temperatures, accompanied by frost and snowfall in some regions. São Paulo also recorded its coldest afternoons of the year in early July, with maximum temperatures not exceeding 13ºC and persistent rain and wind increasing the sensation of cold. The cold weather was expected to continue, with the Civil Defense issuing alerts for further temperature drops across the state of São Paulo through July 11. The ongoing cold front has led to the displacement of over 1,200 people to shelters in Rio Grande do Sul due to the harsh conditions.
