Since early June 2025, São Paulo and its metropolitan region have experienced a wave of vandalism targeting public buses, with over 600 vehicles reported damaged within less than a month. The attacks, which include throwing stones and breaking windows, have predominantly affected the city of São Paulo, especially the southern zone, where approximately 60% of the incidents occurred. On some days, the number of buses vandalized reached record highs, such as 59 buses attacked on July 7 and 35 on July 2 and 3 alone. The police have arrested several suspects, including a man identified as Everton de Paiva Balbino, 32, who was charged with attempted homicide after injuring a female passenger by throwing a stone at a bus window on June 27. Authorities are investigating multiple hypotheses for the vandalism, including challenges promoted on social media and possible involvement of organized crime. In response, the São Paulo Military and Civil Police have launched a large-scale operation deploying over 7,000 agents to protect public transportation, focusing on the most affected areas. The attacks have also spread beyond São Paulo city to the Greater São Paulo area and the Baixada Santista region. The ongoing investigation continues as police seek to identify all perpetrators and understand the motives behind this surge in violence against public transport.
