Since mid-June 2025, São Paulo and its metropolitan region, including the Greater São Paulo area and the Baixada Santista, have experienced a surge in attacks targeting public buses. Over 700 buses have been vandalized in just over a month, with reports indicating that the capital alone has seen more than 432 attacks. The wave of violence includes incidents of buses being stoned, windows shattered, and vehicles seized and used as barricades, notably in Madureira, Rio de Janeiro, where at least 14 buses were taken over by criminals during police operations. These attacks have resulted in injuries, including a woman struck by a thrown stone and a child wounded by glass shards from a projectile. Authorities have arrested multiple suspects, with three men detained in São Paulo, one charged with attempted qualified homicide. The São Paulo Civil Police are investigating possible connections to internet challenges and organized crime. In response, a large-scale operation involving over 7,000 police officers has been launched to protect public transportation, focusing on the most affected areas, particularly six main thoroughfares in the southern zone of São Paulo. The ongoing vandalism has disrupted daily commuting, increased passenger fear, and drawn attention to the security challenges facing the city's transit system. Meanwhile, the Rio de Janeiro police continue efforts to regain control following the bus seizures used as barricades by criminals during operations in the Serrinha complex.
