Part of the M60 ring road around Manchester remained closed in both directions on Tuesday after an eight-vehicle pile-up the previous morning near Stockport. National Highways said the crash, reported at about 11:30 BST on Monday between junction 25 (Bredbury Interchange) and junction 1 (Pyramid Roundabout), involved several heavy goods vehicles and cars. One lorry ploughed through the central reservation, while another shed a load of beer barrels. Fuel tanks were ruptured, sending diesel across all lanes. The North West Ambulance Service said three people were taken to hospital and six others were treated for minor injuries at the scene. Greater Manchester Police, fire crews and highways officers completed vehicle recovery overnight, but extensive resurfacing and barrier repairs were still under way on Tuesday morning. National Highways warned drivers of long delays and urged them to follow signed diversion routes, adding that the motorway would remain shut until at least 10:00 as contractors finish emergency repairs. The disruption has affected traffic to Manchester Airport and surrounding routes, with queues stretching for several miles.
