The UK Government has posthumously awarded the Elizabeth Emblem to 106 police officers, firefighters, health-care workers and other public servants who lost their lives while on duty. The honour, established last year as the civilian counterpart to the Elizabeth Cross for military personnel, is being conferred for only the second time. Each recipient’s next of kin will receive the award, which bears the inscription “For A Life Given In Service.” Among those recognised are high-profile cases such as Gwen Mayor, the teacher killed protecting pupils during the 1996 Dunblane school shooting, and Metropolitan Police Constable Nina Mackay, who was fatally stabbed while making an arrest in 1997. Six health-care workers who contracted Covid-19 on the front line are also included. Northern Ireland accounts for 34 of the honours, including 30 officers—28 from the former Royal Ulster Constabulary and two from the Police Service of Northern Ireland—many of whom were killed during the Troubles. PSNI Chief Constable Jon Boutcher said the award is “a lasting memory” of their bravery and of the grief carried by their families. Announcing the list, Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster Pat McFadden said the country owes “an enduring debt” to public servants who gave their lives to protect others. Families can continue to apply for the Elizabeth Emblem, which is retrospective to 1948 and covers employees of UK, devolved and local governments as well as overseas territories.
