Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand and Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne began a two-day visit to Mexico City on 5 August, holding talks with President Claudia Sheinbaum aimed at deepening bilateral trade and investment. The ministers are also scheduled to meet Economy Minister Marcelo Ebrard and executives from banking, mining, aerospace and agri-food industries. The mission comes days after Washington raised blanket tariffs on Canadian goods to 35 percent, while granting Mexico a 90-day reprieve to negotiate. Ottawa and Mexico are seeking common ground on how to navigate the escalating U.S. protectionism and to prepare for the mandatory review of the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement that starts in January 2026. Champagne said Canada’s relationship with Mexico “has never been stronger or more important” as both countries look to diversify export markets. The meetings precede Prime Minister Mark Carney’s planned visit to Mexico later this year and follow Sheinbaum’s separate discussions with Walmart chief executive Doug McMillon, who reaffirmed more than US$6 billion in new investment that is expected to create about 5,500 jobs. Mexican and Canadian officials say the flurry of high-level contacts underscores a shared intent to reinforce North American supply chains and present a united front in the face of U.S. tariff pressure.
