Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has outlined ambitious goals for the country's tourism sector, aiming to make Mexico the fifth most visited country globally by 2030, representing a 40% increase in visitors. In 2024, Mexico maintained its position as the sixth most visited country, receiving 45 million international tourists according to the United Nations World Tourism Organization. In diplomatic developments, Sheinbaum held a telephone conversation with former U.S. President Donald Trump, during which they agreed to work together toward a comprehensive agreement addressing security, migration, and trade issues. Sheinbaum emphasized the importance of recognizing Mexican families in the United States as part of this agreement. Additionally, she expressed confidence that Mexico and the United States will reach an agreement to avoid the imposition of a 30% tariff on Mexican exports scheduled to take effect on August 1, 2025. In parallel, Sheinbaum also spoke with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney to strengthen bilateral trade relations and reaffirm the importance of respecting the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA or T-MEC). Carney is expected to visit Mexico soon, with the date yet to be confirmed. On the domestic front, Sheinbaum and Mexico's Secretary of Security, Omar Harfuch, launched the 'Mando Unificado Oriente' strategy in the State of Mexico, a unified command coordinating federal, state, and local authorities across 11 municipalities to enhance security. This initiative has reportedly contributed to reductions in homicides in key areas. Meanwhile, Sheinbaum met with nearly a dozen business leaders at the National Palace to discuss accelerating the implementation of the 'Plan México,' a strategic economic plan, urging increased investment to support its goals amid ongoing trade tensions.
