Air traffic at Milan’s Bergamo–Orio al Serio Airport was suspended for nearly two hours on Tuesday after an unidentified man breached security, ran onto the runway and was ingested by the engine of a Volotea Airbus A319 preparing for departure to Asturias, Spain. The incident occurred at about 10:20 a.m. local time, according to airport operator SACBO, prompting an immediate shutdown of operations and the diversion of incoming flights to Bologna, Verona and Milan-Malpensa. The aircraft, operating flight V73511 with 154 passengers and six crew members on board, remained on the ground; no one aboard was injured. Volotea said psychological support is being offered to passengers and staff. SACBO reopened the airport shortly before noon after police completed initial on-site investigations, though several departures were cancelled and delays persisted through the afternoon. Authorities said the victim, believed to be around 35 years old and neither an airport employee nor a passenger, gained access to the restricted area by forcing a ground-level exit door. Investigators are examining how the security breach occurred and whether the man acted deliberately in what some officials described as a possible suicide.
