A 35-year-old man died after being drawn into the engine of a Volotea Airbus A319 that was taxiing for departure at Bergamo–Orio al Serio International Airport on Tuesday morning, prompting an immediate shutdown of the northern Italian hub. The victim, identified by local media as Andrea Russo, breached a restricted area after abandoning his car outside the terminal and ran onto the runway around 10:20 a.m. Airport police attempted to stop him, but he reached the aircraft and was ingested by the port-side engine. Investigators are examining evidence that suggests the act was deliberate. The aircraft, operating flight V73511 to Asturias, Spain, was carrying 154 passengers and six crew members, none of whom were injured. Volotea said the travellers were re-accommodated on a later service and, along with crew, offered psychological support. Airport operator SACBO suspended all movements from 10:20 until shortly before noon, resulting in at least 19 cancellations and several diversions to Milan-Malpensa, Bologna and Verona. Normal operations resumed early in the afternoon at Italy’s third-busiest airport. Prosecutors and aviation authorities are investigating how Russo bypassed security and whether additional measures are needed. The incident has reopened questions about perimeter protection at Bergamo, which handled more than 15 million passengers last year.
