U.S. President Donald Trump warned early Thursday that negotiating a new trade accord with Canada will be "very hard" after Ottawa said it intends to recognise a Palestinian state. In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump wrote: "Wow! Canada has just announced that it is backing statehood for Palestine. That will make it very hard for us to make a Trade Deal with them. Oh’ Canada!!!" Prime Minister Mark Carney announced on Wednesday that Canada plans to formally recognise Palestine during the United Nations General Assembly in September, contingent on reforms by the Palestinian Authority. The move would make Canada the third Group-of-Seven country—after France and the United Kingdom—to signal imminent recognition. Trump’s comments come with bilateral trade talks already under strain. The White House has threatened to impose 35 per cent tariffs on Canadian exports not covered by the existing Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement if the two sides fail to reach a broader deal by 1 August. Carney acknowledged that negotiations in Washington remain "complex, comprehensive and constructive" but may not conclude before the deadline. A U.S. administration official later told Reuters that recognising Palestinian statehood would, in Washington’s view, reward Hamas; the official reiterated that the president’s primary focus is securing humanitarian aid for Gaza. Canada has not responded publicly to Trump’s latest warning, but Carney said earlier that Ottawa is prepared to keep talking until it achieves an accord that protects Canadian interests.

TRUMP WARNS CANADA: PALESTINE RECOGNITION COULD KILL TRADE DEAL
This is ridiculous. If a trade deal with Canada is beneficial to the American people then it should go forward regardless of Canada’s stance on Palestine. The benefit of the American people should be the guiding principle here. https://t.co/p96v27cYBo
