Chile’s National Geology and Mining Service (Sernageomin) on 6 August raised the technical alert for the Laguna del Maule volcanic complex from green to yellow, citing a progressive uptick in seismic activity and an acceleration in surface deformation recorded over recent weeks. The agency warned of a potential hazard from carbon-dioxide emissions within a two-kilometre radius of the anomaly at the caldera, which lies in the Andes roughly 300 kilometres south of Santiago near the Argentine border. Although no evacuations have been ordered, Sernageomin said the volcano remains under close, continuous surveillance. The National Disaster Prevention and Response Service (SENAPRED) simultaneously issued a preventive early-warning alert for the nearby commune of San Clemente and urged residents and visitors to follow official updates. A yellow alert triggers heightened monitoring and coordination among local agencies and allows authorities to impose access restrictions should volcanic activity intensify.
