On July 29, 2025, Guatemala experienced a series of earthquakes with magnitudes reaching up to 6.0, centered primarily in the department of Jutiapa. The seismic activity included multiple tremors, with notable magnitudes of 5.4, 5.6, 5.8, and 6.0, affecting various regions including San Miguel Comapa and San Vicente II. The earthquakes caused damage to several homes, particularly in Comapa, Jutiapa, where a woman was confirmed dead and at least eight people were injured. The tremors were also felt near the borders with Honduras and El Salvador. Authorities, including the National Coordination for Disaster Reduction (Conred), declared an orange alert and activated emergency response protocols. Evacuations were carried out in public and private institutions, including the Palacio Nacional de la Cultura and other government offices in Guatemala City. The President of Guatemala, Bernardo Arévalo, urged citizens to remain calm and confirmed that emergency teams were assessing the damage. The Third Infantry Brigade of the Guatemalan Army conducted damage evaluations and assisted with evacuations in affected areas. The Hospital Nacional de Jutiapa received multiple patients injured by the earthquakes. In response to the events, classes were suspended on July 30 across the Jutiapa department. Despite the seismic events, operations at the La Aurora International Airport continued normally. The U.S. Department of State reminded American citizens that Guatemala is in a seismically active zone due to major fault lines such as Motagua and Chixoy-Polochic. The Congress President, Nery Ramos, pledged urgent support for families impacted by the earthquakes. Conred also launched an online portal for damage reporting to facilitate assistance and recovery efforts.
