A magnitude-6.0 earthquake struck off the Pacific coast near the Guatemala-Mexico border on 9 August, according to Mexico’s Servicio Sismológico Nacional and the U.S. Geological Survey. The epicentre was located about 139 kilometres southwest of Ciudad Hidalgo, Chiapas, at a depth of roughly 38 kilometres. Guatemalan agency INSIVUMEH measured the tremor at a similar magnitude. Civil-protection authorities in both countries reported no injuries or significant damage after inspections in coastal communities. Seismic activity continued in the region through the weekend. Mexico’s monitoring network recorded a series of aftershocks, including events of magnitude 5.8 and 5.9 off the Chiapas coast late on 10 August and early on 11 August. The German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) separately logged a magnitude-5.65 quake near the coast of Oaxaca on 11 August. A magnitude-5.3 tremor was also felt in parts of Chiapas the same evening, again without reports of damage. Protección Civil de Chiapas and Guatemala’s disaster-response agency CONRED activated standard monitoring protocols and advised residents to remain vigilant, but neither agency issued tsunami alerts. The latest sequence follows a 5.7-magnitude quake in nearby Guatemala last month that left seven people dead, underscoring the region’s vulnerability to shallow offshore earthquakes.
