Chile's state-owned copper company Codelco is conducting a critical rescue operation at its El Teniente mine following a collapse triggered by a magnitude 4.2 earthquake. The incident, described as the worst in decades, resulted in one confirmed death and multiple injuries. Five miners were trapped more than 900 meters underground. Over several days, rescue teams have made gradual progress, advancing 20 meters toward the trapped workers. Despite extensive efforts deploying all available human, technical, and material resources, contact with the miners has not yet been established. Former Chilean Minister Laurence Golborne joined the international rescue council to support the operation. President Gabriel Boric has personally visited the site in Rancagua, met with authorities and families, and emphasized the need for justice and clarity while focusing on the rescue. Tragically, four of the five trapped miners have been found deceased so far, with the fifth miner, Jean Miranda Ibaceta, recently confirmed dead as well. The identities of the deceased miners include Paulo, Gonzalo, Álex, Carlos, and Jean. The investigation into the collapse includes inquiries into potential criminal negligence. The rescue operation continues amid national mourning, with authorities and Codelco committed to recovering the remaining bodies and understanding the causes of the disaster.
