China is confronting its largest recorded outbreak of chikungunya, with health officials in Guangdong province reporting more than 7,700 confirmed infections since early July. The mosquito-borne virus, which causes high fever and debilitating joint pain, has spread to at least 13 cities, led by the manufacturing hub of Foshan near Hong Kong. Transmission appears to be slowing. In Foshan’s Shunde district, new infections have declined for eight straight days, falling from 2,892 province-wide cases logged between July 27 and August 2 to 122 new cases reported on 6 August. Provincial authorities said all recent cases have been classified as mild. Officials have revived some COVID-era tactics—mandatory hospital stays under mosquito nets, real-name registration for fever and pain medication, and citywide disinfection drives—while deploying drones, releasing mosquito-eating fish and threatening fines of up to 10,000 yuan (US$1,400) for households that fail to remove stagnant water. Foshan, Zhongshan and Zhanjiang are running synchronized clean-up campaigns aimed at eliminating mosquito breeding sites. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued a Level 2 “Practice Enhanced Precautions” advisory for travelers to Guangdong on 1 August, citing the outbreak and noting that global chikungunya infections have reached roughly 240,000 this year. Hong Kong has confirmed four imported cases linked to recent travel, underscoring concerns that the virus could seed new clusters beyond mainland China.
