China is responding to an outbreak of the mosquito-borne chikungunya virus, which has infected over 7,700 people in Guangdong province since early July 2025. The southern city of Foshan, a hotspot for the outbreak, has seen a decline in new cases over consecutive days due to targeted prevention measures including the release of mosquito-eating fish, citywide cleanup campaigns, insecticide spraying, drone surveillance, and the installation of mosquito nets in drainage systems. Authorities have reinstated some Covid-era health controls such as real-name registration for fever and pain relief medication purchases and imposed fines to curb the spread. The outbreak has prompted the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to issue a Level 2 travel advisory for China, warning travelers to take enhanced precautions. The virus causes fever, severe joint and muscle pain, and is transmitted exclusively through mosquito bites, with no evidence of human-to-human transmission. Hong Kong has reported several imported cases linked to travel from Foshan. Chinese officials have mobilized extensive public health campaigns and resources similar to those used during the Covid-19 pandemic to contain the disease. More than 90% of patients in Foshan have reportedly recovered, and new cases continue to decline as control efforts persist. Globally, chikungunya infections have reached approximately 240,000 cases, prompting heightened international awareness and precautionary measures.
