China’s Cyberspace Administration on 31 July summoned Nvidia representatives to explain reports that the company’s H20 artificial-intelligence chip contains back-door vulnerabilities that could allow tracking, geolocation or remote shutdown. The regulator asked the U.S. firm to provide documentation demonstrating that the processor, designed specifically for the Chinese market, poses no threat to data security. The inquiry comes less than three weeks after Washington lifted an export ban on the H20 and as lawmakers in the United States debate legislation that would force advanced chips shipped abroad to carry location-tracking functions. Nvidia has reportedly ordered about 300,000 H20 units from contract manufacturer TSMC to meet expected demand from Chinese customers. In a written response, an Nvidia spokesperson said, “Cybersecurity is critically important to us. Nvidia does not have ‘backdoors’ in our chips that would give anyone a remote way to access or control them.” China’s state-run People’s Daily said in a commentary that Nvidia must present “convincing security proofs” to regain user confidence, underscoring the political and commercial stakes as Beijing pushes domestic buyers toward home-grown alternatives. The summons adds fresh uncertainty to Nvidia’s China strategy amid escalating U.S.–China technology frictions.
