China has removed restrictions on the export of fertilisers, rare-earth magnets and tunnel-boring machines to India, according to Indian government officials and local media reports on 19 August. The decision follows talks in New Delhi between Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, during which Wang pledged to address the three supply bottlenecks that had strained trade ties. Beijing imposed the curbs in mid-2025 amid heightened security tensions, disrupting India’s agriculture, automotive and infrastructure sectors. China supplies about 30 % of India’s fertiliser imports and is a dominant global source of rare-earth inputs used in electric motors and electronics, as well as specialised machinery for metro and highway projects. Wang is also scheduled to meet National Security Adviser Ajit Doval and call on Prime Minister Narendra Modi later on Tuesday. Officials said broader border and security issues are expected to feature in those discussions, but the immediate agreement on key industrial supplies is being viewed in New Delhi as a step toward normalising economic engagement.
