China is currently managing its largest outbreak of chikungunya fever, a mosquito-borne viral disease characterized by fever, joint pain, and rash. Since mid-June, over 7,000 cases have been reported across at least 13 cities, with Guangdong province, particularly Foshan city, being the epicenter. The weekly new cases in Guangdong have declined sharply from nearly 3,000 in previous weeks to 1,387 in the week of August 3 to 9, with more than 90% of patients in Foshan recovering. Authorities have implemented extensive containment measures including public awareness campaigns, quarantine hospitalizations, patient isolation, insecticide spraying, mosquito netting, drone deployments, and releasing lab-bred mosquitoes to control the vector population. The National Disease Control and Prevention Administration has issued technical guidelines for chikungunya prevention and control, designating Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region as a Category I risk area alongside other high-risk provinces. Despite progress in Guangdong, health experts caution that wet weather patterns in South China could sustain transmission risks. The outbreak has prompted elevated alerts in Hong Kong and has drawn international attention as cases have increased in other regions, including a near tripling of travel-related chikungunya cases in England during the first half of 2025. Chikungunya is not a new virus but has re-emerged as a significant public health concern in China, with authorities maintaining vigilance to prevent further spread.
