China’s smartphone market contracted sharply in May, with overall handset shipments dropping 21.8% from a year earlier to 23.72 million units, according to data from the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT). Shipments of foreign-branded devices, a category that includes Apple’s iPhone, fell a comparatively milder 9.7% to 4.54 million units, the agency’s figures show. The latest numbers highlight continued weakness in consumer demand despite recent efforts by manufacturers to stimulate sales through discounts and new model launches.
