Chinese electric vehicle (EV) manufacturers, led by BYD, have surpassed Tesla in producing affordable EVs and are now advancing rapidly in the global race to develop self-driving cars. Chinese robotaxi companies, supported by strong automotive supply chains and central government backing, have expanded to more than 50 cities across China, with over 10 cities now offering robotaxi services. Baidu’s Apollo Go recently overtook Waymo, the U.S. leader that launched the world’s first fully driverless service in Phoenix in 2020, in the number of robotaxi rides and is expanding into the Middle East and Europe. This progress highlights China’s growing technological capabilities in autonomous vehicles, challenging Tesla’s self-driving ambitions. Additionally, Xiaomi’s SU7 Ultra electric vehicle has set a new production EV lap record at Germany’s Nürburgring circuit with a time of 7:04.957, surpassing the previous record held by the Porsche Taycan Turbo GT. The SU7 Ultra is now recognized as the world’s fastest production EV, outperforming both Porsche and Tesla models. In a related innovation, a college student in Shenzhen built a micro quadcopter that achieved a Guinness World Record top speed of 340.78 km/h.
