BMW is preparing to challenge Tesla in the electric vehicle (EV) market with its upcoming all-electric iX3 SUV, which the company claims will set a new industry standard. The iX3 is expected to offer an EPA range exceeding 400 miles and support charging speeds up to 400 kW, enabling approximately 200 miles of range to be added in 10 minutes. The vehicle will feature a redesigned cockpit with a panoramic view and a new “superbrain” computing system that delivers 20 times the processing power of BMW’s previous system. BMW’s CEO Oliver Zipse has stated that the new line of EVs will benchmark the industry with longer range and high-performance software. The iX3 is part of BMW’s Neue Klasse platform, which will underpin around 40 new or updated models globally by the end of 2027, including 17 battery-electric vehicles and 19 combustion engine models. BMW is also focusing on sustainability, having reduced the carbon footprint of the iX3 through advanced manufacturing and the use of Gen6 batteries that enhance energy density and charging speed. Meanwhile, Tesla is advancing its own EV offerings, with filings revealing a new Model 3 variant boasting up to 830 km range and a Model Y Long Range variant with 751 km range, both equipped with large-capacity battery packs. Tesla is also updating the Model 3 with the addition of front bumper cameras, a feature already present on the Model Y Juniper. BMW’s efforts represent a strategic push to compete directly with Tesla and respond to the growing electric vehicle market, including competition from Chinese manufacturers.
