U.S. President Donald Trump said in a Fox News interview aired 16 August that Chinese President Xi Jinping had assured him China would not launch a military invasion of Taiwan while Trump remains in office. Trump cited a recent conversation in which Xi purportedly stated, “I will never do it as long as you’re president,” adding that the Chinese leader also stressed Beijing’s patience over the long-running sovereignty dispute. Beijing has not confirmed Trump’s account. The Chinese Embassy in Washington, without addressing the reported pledge, reiterated that Taiwan is the “most important and sensitive issue” in relations with the United States and urged Washington to adhere to the One-China principle. Taiwan’s government has yet to issue an official response, though ruling Democratic Progressive Party lawmaker Wang Ting-yu welcomed U.S. backing while cautioning that the island’s security must ultimately rest on its own defence capabilities. The remarks come amid heightened U.S.–China tensions over trade, technology and security, and follow the first confirmed call of Trump’s second term with Xi in June. While Washington remains Taipei’s chief arms supplier, it maintains no formal diplomatic ties to the self-governed island that Beijing claims as its own.
