A gunman opened fire Friday afternoon outside the main campus of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, striking four agency buildings and killing a responding police officer before he was found dead inside a nearby pharmacy, authorities said. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation on Saturday identified the shooter as Patrick Joseph White, 30, of Kennesaw, Georgia. Officer David Rose, 33, who had served with the DeKalb County Police Department since September 2024, was fatally wounded while responding to reports of an active shooter at the two-story CVS in Emory Point. No civilians were hit by gunfire, although four people were treated for stress-related symptoms. Investigators said White fired multiple rounds from inside the pharmacy, shattering windows at four CDC buildings; 92 children in a daycare on the campus were unharmed. Several firearms were recovered at the scene. Authorities are examining evidence that the suspect believed he had been sickened by a COVID-19 vaccine and deliberately targeted the CDC, but stressed that the motive remains under investigation. Emory University, Emory University Hospital and the CDC issued “Run, Hide, Fight” alerts and lifted shelter-in-place orders roughly two hours later. The CDC told employees to work remotely on Monday while security reviews continue. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is leading the probe with assistance from the FBI and Atlanta-area police agencies.
