A 47-year-old man due in court for a domestic-violence hearing the next day opened fire at Richmond Road Baptist Church in Lexington, Kentucky, on Sunday, killing two women and wounding two men before police fatally shot him, authorities said. The gunman, identified as Guy House, killed Beverly Gumm, 72, and Christina Combs, 34, during a morning service at the rural congregation. Investigators said the rampage began about an hour earlier when House shot and injured a Kentucky State Police trooper during a traffic stop near Lexington’s airport, then carjacked a vehicle and drove roughly 16 miles to the church. The trooper remains in stable condition. Court records show House was scheduled to appear in Fayette County family court on Monday for a domestic-violence case that did not involve the victims at the church. Police said he went to the church looking for the mother of his children and had active arrest warrants, a history of mental-health problems and prior criminal charges. Lexington Police Chief Lawrence Weathers said preliminary evidence indicates House knew some congregants, though a motive has not been determined. Governor Andy Beshear and Attorney General Russell Coleman praised the swift police response and pledged state support for the ongoing investigation.
