A gunman opened fire at Bangkok’s Or Tor Kor Market on Monday, killing five people before turning the weapon on himself, Thai police said. The Erawan Medical Center reported that two women were treated for gunshot wounds. Metropolitan Police Bureau commander Siam Bunsom told reporters the attacker began shooting around 12:31 p.m. local time, first striking three security guards in the market’s parking area and then a fourth guard with whom he allegedly had a personal dispute. He moved into the fresh-produce section, fatally shooting a female merchant and injuring another shopper before reloading and ending his own life. Investigators are reviewing security-camera footage and interviewing witnesses to establish the gunman’s identity and motive. Deputy Bang Sue district police chief Worapat Sukthai said no evidence has emerged linking the attack to the current Thailand-Cambodia border clashes, and no foreign tourists were among the casualties. The shooting adds to a string of high-profile gun incidents in Thailand, including a 2023 mall attack that left two dead and a 2022 nursery massacre that claimed 36 lives. The latest violence may heighten concerns over firearm access and public safety in the tourism-dependent economy.
