A Cedar Hill police pursuit of a suspected impaired driver ended in fatal gunfire in southern Dallas on Thursday afternoon, authorities said. Officers began chasing a man driving a U-Haul moving van at about 2 p.m. on U.S. Highway 67. The vehicle stopped roughly 15 minutes later near the intersection of Town Creek Drive and Glen Oaks Boulevard, where the driver fled into a wooded area. During the foot pursuit a Cedar Hill officer fired at the suspect, described only as a white male, who was pronounced dead at the scene despite officers’ attempts to render aid. No officers were injured. The officer who discharged his weapon has been placed on administrative leave in line with department policy. The Dallas Police Department’s Special Investigations Unit, overseen by the Dallas County Public Integrity Division, is leading the inquiry into the shooting. Investigators had not released the suspect’s identity or said whether he was armed as of Thursday evening.
