Federal agents on Tuesday arrested Benjamin Hanil Song, the final fugitive suspected of staging a coordinated July 4 attack outside the Prairieland Detention Center, an Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility in Alvarado, Texas. FBI SWAT officers took the 32-year-old former U.S. Marine Corps reservist into custody at an apartment complex in far-north Dallas without incident, ending a week-long manhunt that had prompted a statewide Blue Alert. Prosecutors say Song was part of a heavily armed group that lured officers out of the detention center with fireworks and vandalism before opening fire from nearby woods. Roughly 20–30 rounds were discharged, and an Alvarado police officer was shot in the neck but survived. Investigators allege Song purchased four of the firearms used and hid overnight in the woods before evading capture. Song is charged in federal court with three counts of attempted murder of federal agents and three counts of discharging a firearm during a violent crime. He is being held in the Johnson County Jail on a $15 million bond. Acting U.S. Attorney Nancy E. Larson said the Justice Department ‘will not tolerate acts of violence toward law enforcement,’ while FBI Dallas Special Agent in Charge R. Joseph Rothrock credited multi-agency cooperation for the arrest. Including Song, authorities have now detained 15 people in connection with the ambush; most face potential life sentences if convicted. The investigation has recovered at least 14 firearms, body armor and radios, and it remains ongoing as agents examine how the group organized and financed the assault.
