A 27-year-old Michigan man, Ryan Louis Mosqueda, was killed after he opened fire with an assault rifle at the entrance to a U.S. Border Patrol sector annex in McAllen, Texas, early Monday, authorities said. The attack began shortly before 6 a.m. local time and drew an immediate response from agents and McAllen police officers, who returned fire and fatally wounded the gunman. Two local officers and a Border Patrol employee were injured during the exchange, including a 10-year veteran officer struck in the knee. All three were taken to hospital and are listed in stable condition, according to the Department of Homeland Security. McAllen Police Chief Victor Rodriguez said Mosqueda wore tactical gear and fired “many dozens of rounds” before being stopped. Investigators recovered another rifle, ammunition and backpacks from his nearby Chevrolet, which bore Michigan plates and the spray-painted phrase “Cordis DIE.” Mosqueda had been reported missing from Weslaco about an hour earlier, and his father had told police he feared his son was armed and unstable. The FBI has assumed control of the inquiry. Officials have not determined a motive and said there is no ongoing threat to the public. Traffic near McAllen International Airport was temporarily halted while officers secured the scene.
