Philadelphia police are searching for multiple gunmen after a mass shooting in the Grays Ferry section of South Philadelphia left three people dead and at least ten others wounded just before 1 a.m. on Monday, 7 July. Surveillance from a Ring doorbell camera shows several attackers opening fire on a crowd gathered along the 1500 block of South Etting Street, prompting a chaotic exchange of gunfire that lasted roughly 16 seconds. The victims killed were identified as Azir Harris, 24; Zahir Wylie, 23; and Jason Reese, 19. Those injured range in age from 15 to 24, including two 17-year-old boys and a 15-year-old girl. Police said more than 100 shell casings from at least four different-caliber weapons were recovered at the scene, and nearby homes and cars were struck by stray bullets. Investigators released images of several suspects and have offered a $20,000 reward for information leading to arrests and convictions. One person found with a firearm was taken into custody, but detectives believe multiple shooters remain at large. Commissioner Kevin Bethel condemned the attack as “cowardly” and vowed to “bring those individuals to justice.” The incident capped a violent Independence Day weekend in Philadelphia, where police recorded 19 separate shootings that left six people dead and 46 injured city-wide. While officials note overall homicides are down about 10 % year-to-date, they acknowledged the July 4 period remains one of the city’s most challenging spans for gun violence.
