Philadelphia police say eight people were wounded when gunfire erupted at about 3:50 a.m. Saturday inside the 7 Elements Restaurant Bar & Lounge on South 11th Street, near Washington Avenue. The victims—five men and three women ranging from 25 to 43 years old—were shot after an altercation spilled from a balcony into the two-storey venue during early-morning July 4 holiday celebrations. Two of the victims, including a security guard struck in the face and a woman shot in the back, were initially listed in critical condition; authorities later said all eight were stable and expected to survive. Most injuries were to arms and legs, and some victims made their own way to hospitals. Inspector D.F. Pace said officers forced entry into the closed bar and found spent shell casings on the upper level, the stairwell and the parking lot below, indicating shots may have been fired from multiple positions. Detectives are reviewing surveillance footage to determine how many shooters were involved and have not announced any arrests. The episode is at least the seventh mass-shooting incident in Pennsylvania this year, according to police and independent tallies, underscoring a rise in holiday-weekend gun violence nationwide.
