Former Republican Congressman George Santos has begun serving an 87-month prison sentence after pleading guilty to federal crimes including wire fraud and aggravated identity theft. Santos, who was ousted from Congress due to these charges, issued a statement prior to reporting to prison asserting that he is not suicidal, depressed, or intending to harm himself. He surrendered to authorities and was confirmed to have reported to the Federal Correctional Institution Fairton in New Jersey to commence his sentence. Santos faces more than seven years behind bars for his conviction on fraud and identity theft charges.
