Los Angeles County sheriff’s detectives have arrested 63-year-old Yoon (Kevin) Lai on suspicion of murdering his estranged wife, Irene Gaw-Lai, whose body was discovered after a house fire in San Marino nearly six months ago. Fire crews responding to the 6 January blaze on Lorain Road found the 56-year-old endocrinologist dead inside the residence. Investigators reported signs of upper-body trauma and opened a homicide inquiry, serving 25 search warrants before obtaining Thursday’s no-bail warrant for Lai and detaining him in nearby San Gabriel. The couple were undergoing a contentious divorce filed in August 2024, according to court records. The medical examiner could not determine whether Gaw-Lai died from the fire or prior injuries because of the extent of burns. Detectives plan to present their case to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office on 8 July.
