Dr. Salvador Plasencia, 43, has agreed to plead guilty to four counts of illegally distributing ketamine in a federal case stemming from the 2023 overdose death of actor Matthew Perry, according to a court filing unsealed Monday. The Malibu urgent-care physician faces a statutory maximum of 40 years in prison when he is sentenced in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles. Perry, known worldwide for his role as Chandler Bing on the television series “Friends,” was found unresponsive in the hot tub at his Pacific Palisades home on Oct. 28, 2023. An autopsy determined the 54-year-old died from the acute effects of ketamine, which caused him to lose consciousness and drown. Under the plea agreement, Plasencia admits he injected Perry with ketamine at the actor’s residence and in a Santa Monica parking lot in the weeks before the death, supplying roughly 20 vials of the anesthetic for thousands of dollars and acknowledging the sales were not for legitimate medical purposes. He obtained the drug through fellow physician Mark Chavez, who has also entered a guilty plea. Plasencia is the fourth of five defendants charged last year to reach a deal with prosecutors. Chavez, Perry’s assistant Kenneth Iwamasa and intermediary Erik Fleming pleaded guilty earlier; alleged drug dealer Jasveen Sangha, accused of providing the fatal dose and dubbed the “ketamine queen,” is scheduled to go on trial in August. Ketamine is approved as a short-acting anesthetic and is used off-label to treat depression and anxiety, but regulators have intensified scrutiny of its diversion. Plasencia is expected to formally enter his plea in the coming weeks; a sentencing date has not yet been set.
