A classroom altercation at Maryvale High School in west Phoenix escalated into a stabbing around 11 a.m. Tuesday, according to the Phoenix Police Department. Officers arriving at the campus near 59th Avenue and Osborn Road found two male students injured. Both were taken to hospital; one later died of stab wounds while the other was treated for non-life-threatening injuries. The Arizona Department of Education confirmed the fatality, and State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Horne called the death “a terrible tragedy,” praising the on-site safety officer for rendering immediate aid. Police said there is no ongoing threat to students or staff, and the campus lockdown initiated after the incident has been lifted. Detectives are investigating what prompted the fight, and no additional details on the students involved have been released. City Council-member Betty Guardado, who represents the district, said the community is working with school officials and police to ensure safety as classes resume.
