The Massachusetts State Police have reassigned Sergeant Yuri Bukhenik, one of the lead investigators in the death of Boston Police Officer John O’Keefe and the subsequent prosecution of Karen Read, officials said Monday. Bukhenik moved on 6 July to an administrative role in the Division of Standards and Training, ending his post within the Norfolk County District Attorney’s Office. Bukhenik testified in both of Read’s trials and supervised Trooper Michael Proctor, who was fired in March after admitting he sent crude text messages about Read during the investigation. Bukhenik was docked five vacation days last autumn for failing to discipline Proctor. His transfer comes less than a month after a jury cleared Read of murder and vehicular-manslaughter charges—convicting her only of operating under the influence—and follows MSP Superintendent Col. Geoffrey Noble’s pledge to tighten oversight and accountability within the department. The State Police said they are now accepting applications to fill Bukhenik’s former position with the district attorney’s office.
