Calgary Officer Faces Two Second-Degree Murder Charges in 2023 Pursuit Shooting

Alberta’s police watchdog has charged Calgary Police Service Constable Craig Stothard with two counts of second-degree murder stemming from a May 29, 2023 shooting that killed two men following a slow-speed vehicle pursuit on Memorial Drive. The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) said its investigation provided reasonable grounds to believe Stothard committed offences, prompting the Alberta Crown Prosecution Service to approve the charges. The officer appeared in court on Tuesday and was released under conditions while the case proceeds. Calgary Police Chief Katie McLellan placed Stothard on leave and acknowledged the gravity of the allegations, saying the service is committed to supporting the judicial process and maintaining public trust.
