A 42-year-old Michigan resident was arrested after allegedly stabbing 11 people inside a Walmart in Traverse City at about 4:45 p.m. on Saturday, according to the Grand Traverse County Sheriff’s Office. The sheriff, Michael Shea, said the assailant used a standard folding knife and appeared to select victims at random. Munson Medical Center, the region’s main hospital, said it was treating all 11 victims: six were in critical condition and five were listed as serious late Saturday. The attack began near the store’s checkout area and ended within minutes when a deputy arrived and, with assistance from shoppers, subdued the suspect. Michigan State Police, the FBI and the state crime lab are assisting the investigation, which so far has uncovered no clear motive. Authorities have not released the suspect’s name while they question him and review surveillance footage. Governor Gretchen Whitmer called the violence “brutal” and thanked first responders for their quick action. Walmart said it is cooperating fully with law-enforcement agencies. Mass violence is rare in Traverse City, a Lake Michigan resort town known for its cherry festival and wineries.
