A gunman opened fire around 7:30 a.m. Monday in the valet area of the Grand Sierra Resort, Reno’s largest casino-hotel, killing three people and wounding three others, authorities said. Two of the injured remained in critical condition while the third was treated and released, according to Sparks Police Chief Chris Crawforth. Officers from the Reno Police Department reached the scene in under three minutes, exchanged gunfire with the assailant and took him into custody. The suspect’s motive has not been determined and no connection to the victims has been identified. Investigators said the shooter first aimed a handgun at a group near the valet stand; the weapon briefly malfunctioned before the attacker resumed firing. The gunman then fled through the parking lot, shooting at an armed casino security guard and a passing motorist, the latter of whom was fatally struck. The exchange ended when police confronted and shot the suspect, who was subsequently hospitalized. Chief Kathryn Nance described the attack as a “horrific” event for the community, which has been urged to avoid the area while the investigation continues.
