New York City officials said an eight-month law-enforcement blitz on Roosevelt Avenue in Queens has driven a 28 percent year-to-date decline in major crime and eliminated gun violence along the corridor. Mayor Eric Adams and Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch presented the results of “Operation Restore Roosevelt” at a press briefing on 24 June, noting that no shootings or shots fired have been recorded in the area so far in 2025. The multi-agency initiative, which began in October 2024, has produced 2,501 arrests—including 397 for prostitution-related offenses—and 27,821 summonses, according to city data. Officers have also confiscated 877 vehicles, among them 648 illegal mopeds, scooters and all-terrain vehicles, and carried out 303 building inspections that led to 18 vacate orders. Arrests of eight alleged members of the 18th Street Gang were highlighted as a key step in dismantling networks that officials said fueled drug dealing and sex trafficking. Robberies have fallen 27 percent, felony assaults 28 percent and burglaries 48 percent compared with the same period last year, the police department said. While some residents told local media that quality-of-life complaints persist, Adams and Tisch pledged to maintain an enhanced police presence and continue partnerships with city health, sanitation and fire agencies to convert the temporary crackdown into lasting improvements for the Elmhurst and Corona neighborhoods.
The Break the Cycle of Violence Act would permanently fund proven community programs that save lives by reducing gun violence. Congress must pass the Break the Cycle of Violence Act. https://t.co/2fXhtf7LRi https://t.co/lowadSCxzo
Today marks three years since the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act was signed into law. Since its passage, we’ve seen the steepest decline in homicides in U.S. history, mass shootings are down, and thousands of lives have been saved. This is what progress looks like – but ask
