The Civil Police of Rio de Janeiro (PCERJ) has conducted a series of coordinated operations targeting theft, robbery, and the illegal trade of stolen goods in the state. On July 1, 2025, PCERJ launched 'Operação Rastreio,' the largest offensive against cell phone theft and trafficking in Rio de Janeiro, involving agents across all 92 municipalities. During the operation's initial 'Dia D,' 102 individuals were arrested and over 1,400 stolen cell phones recovered. As part of this initiative, the state government and PCERJ introduced the 'Celular Seguro RJ' app to aid in combating these crimes. Subsequently, on July 16, PCERJ carried out 'Operação Torniquete,' focusing on the robbery and trafficking of cargo in the North Fluminense and Região dos Lagos regions, resulting in the arrest of 16 suspects. Following this, on July 17, PCERJ launched 'Operação Caminhos do Cobre' targeting the largest illegal scrapyard in Rio's North Zone, seizing 10 tons of wires. The police have begun contacting owners of recovered cell phones to facilitate their return through designated collection points.
