An upstate New York resident, Shane Daley, was arrested Wednesday and charged in federal court with cyberstalking for allegedly harassing a family member of slain UnitedHealthcare chief executive Brian Thompson, the U.S. Justice Department said. Prosecutors contend Daley left four profanity-filled voicemails between Dec. 4 and Dec. 7, 2024—hours after Thompson’s killing—praising the shooting and warning that Thompson’s children "deserved to meet the same violent end." A criminal complaint filed in the Northern District of New York links the calls to Daley’s personal cellphone and cites an FBI agent who said he recognised Daley’s voice during a July 30 interview. The messages were directed to Thompson’s widow, Paulette, at her Minnesota work number, according to the affidavit. Daley was arraigned before U.S. Magistrate Judge Daniel J. Stewart in Albany, then released under GPS monitoring with bans on firearms and alcohol; he faces up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine if convicted. Thompson, 50, who had led UnitedHealthcare since 2021, was shot dead on a midtown Manhattan sidewalk on Dec. 4, 2024, as he walked to an investor conference. Luigi Mangione, 27, has been charged in both state and federal court with the homicide and pleaded not guilty. Authorities emphasized that Daley is not accused of participating in the murder. The FBI’s New York office, working with prosecutors in the Northern and Southern Districts of New York, said the investigation remains ongoing.
