A federal grand jury in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday returned a nine-count indictment against Elias Rodriguez, 31, for the 21 May shooting that killed two employees of the Israeli Embassy outside the Capital Jewish Museum. The charges include murder of a foreign official, two counts of hate crime resulting in death, firearms offenses and District-of-Columbia counts of first-degree murder and assault with intent to kill. Prosecutors allege Rodriguez targeted the victims—Yaron Lischinsky, 30, and Sarah Milgrim, 26—because they were Israelis. Court papers say he flew from Chicago with a legally purchased 9 mm handgun, fired roughly 20 rounds while shouting “Free Palestine” and later told police, “I did it for Gaza.” The indictment contains special findings that permit the Justice Department to pursue the death penalty, which would mark one of the first federal capital cases in the district in years. Rodriguez remains in custody awaiting arraignment; he has not yet entered a plea.
