Israel’s Shin Bet security service and the Israel Police said Thursday they have arrested and indicted an Israel Defense Forces soldier on charges of spying for Iran. A military prosecutor filed the indictment in a military court on 17 July, accusing the conscript of maintaining contacts with Iranian intelligence agents and passing them information in exchange for money. Investigators allege the soldier sent the handlers videos of missile interceptions and photographs of rocket impact sites within Israel. The agencies said the material was not classified, yet the indictment cites serious security offenses, including contact with a foreign agent and conveying information to an enemy entity. The investigation was conducted jointly by Shin Bet, the police’s Lahav 433 major-crimes division and the Military Police. Authorities withheld the suspect’s name and unit, and did not disclose the sums paid, but said the alleged espionage occurred during recent hostilities with Iran. If convicted, the soldier faces a lengthy prison sentence.
