A 20-year-old Palestinian-American, Sayfollah “Saif” Musallet, died on 11 July after Israeli settlers allegedly beat him during an attack in the West Bank village of Sinjil, north of Ramallah. Musallet, who was visiting relatives from his home in Florida, reportedly lay unattended for several hours after settlers prevented an ambulance from reaching him. The same incident left another Palestinian, 23-year-old Mohammed al-Shalabi, dead from gunfire and injured nearly 50 others, according to Palestinian health officials. Israel’s military and police say they have opened a joint investigation and detained several people for questioning, but no suspects remain in custody. The Israel Defense Forces contend the violence followed rock-throwing that lightly injured settlers, while Musallet’s family maintains he was protecting family land from encroachment. An absence of an autopsy and the rapid burial of the victims could complicate the inquiry, Israeli media report. On 15 July, U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee called the killing a “criminal and terrorist act” and asked Israeli authorities to “aggressively investigate” the case—an unusually blunt demand from Washington. The State Department confirmed the death of a U.S. citizen, and members of Congress from both parties have urged either an Israeli or U.S-led probe to ensure accountability. The death comes amid a sharp rise in settler violence in the West Bank since the Gaza war began in October 2023. United Nations figures show roughly 1,000 Palestinians have been killed in the territory by Israeli forces or settlers during that period, underscoring growing diplomatic pressure on Israel to curb attacks and prosecute offenders.
