Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin has directed the Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation to open a full criminal probe into allegations that Fairfax County Public Schools staff arranged and paid for abortions for under-age students without notifying their parents. A statement from the governor’s office cites reports that officials at Centreville High School may have used school funds—potentially including local, state and federal dollars—to finance at least two abortions in 2021. According to the reports, social worker Carolina Diaz allegedly scheduled the procedures, covered clinic fees and instructed the students to keep the matter secret. Teacher Zenaida Perez said she repeatedly raised concerns with school administrators, claiming Principal Chad Lehman was aware of the activity. Virginia law mandates that at least one parent be notified before a minor undergoes an abortion unless a court grants a bypass. Fairfax County Public Schools said it has launched its own internal investigation and stated it was previously unaware of staff involvement in arranging abortions. The state police urged anyone with information to come forward as investigators examine possible violations of parental-consent statutes and misuse of public funds.
