Steve Bannon, former White House chief strategist, has expressed skepticism about the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) achieving its goal of cutting $1 trillion in federal waste, fraud, and abuse. Bannon, speaking on his War Room podcast, suggested that the actual savings from these efforts would not reach the trillion-dollar target set by DOGE. Bannon emphasized the need for significant federal spending cuts to combat inflation, stating that the proposed cuts by DOGE, while commendable, are insufficient. He warned that Democrats could use the failure to meet this ambitious goal against President Donald Trump. Bannon highlighted the broader fiscal challenges, noting that the U.S. faces a $2 trillion deficit and needs to manage $6.5 trillion in spending. DOGE, led by Elon Musk, has been actively working to identify and eliminate unnecessary federal spending. Recent actions include the cancellation of a $10.3 million USDA contract aimed at identifying unnecessary contracts, as well as the termination of 162 non-essential contracts with a total ceiling value of approximately $205 million, resulting in savings of $90 million. The proposed Continuing Resolution (CR) would modestly reduce spending below fiscal year 2024 levels but maintain funding for agencies like USAID and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, which Trump and DOGE have targeted for dismantling. The CR also includes additional funding for veterans healthcare, defense spending, and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), while requesting the rescission of $20 billion in IRS enforcement funding. House Republicans plan to implement further DOGE cuts in the fiscal year 2026 appropriations process.
