U.S. Representative Lauren Boebert on Tuesday called for the appointment of a special counsel to examine the unreleased files tied to the late financier Jeffrey Epstein. Boebert said she wants full disclosure of the materials and renewed scrutiny of how the Justice Department handled the high-profile sex-trafficking investigation that ended after Epstein’s 2019 jailhouse death. The Colorado Republican suggested fellow lawmaker Matt Gaetz could lead such an inquiry and said Ghislaine Maxwell, Epstein’s longtime associate now serving a 20-year prison sentence, should be compelled to testify. Boebert argued that a special counsel is necessary to give the public confidence that any remaining evidence is reviewed independently of political influence.
