Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser said federal law-enforcement reinforcements ordered by President Donald Trump have led to an 87% reduction in carjackings compared with the same 20-day period a year earlier. Bowser told reporters on Wednesday that violent crime has fallen about 45% in the three weeks since the additional officers arrived, and overall gun crimes and homicides are also lower. Trump last month invoked emergency powers to place the Metropolitan Police Department under federal direction and deployed several hundred agents from the FBI, DEA, ATF, Park Police and other agencies, alongside National Guard troops. The White House followed with executive orders expanding U.S. Park Police staffing, adding prosecutors at the U.S. Attorney’s Office and creating a dedicated National Guard unit for the capital. Preliminary figures released by the DC Police Union show total crime down 11% city-wide in the past two weeks, including sharp declines in robberies, assaults and property offenses. Supporters, including some local business owners, say the visible federal presence has improved public safety. Critics argue the move over-militarizes city streets and have filed a lawsuit challenging the takeover, a case a federal judge has urged both sides to settle.
